FAN EXPO 2015 Member Panels

FAN EXPO 2015 Member Panels

Friday, September 4

So You Want to Write Horror? (11:15 am, room 703)

Richard S. Todd moderates a panel discussing the basic craft of writing a horror story. This will include tips on how to build characters and suspense, develop plots and outlines, and the best way to market your new best seller!

What Scares You? (12:45 pm, room 705)

Is it thunder? Dolls? Spiders? Or clowns? This panel examines what scares people both in real life and in fiction, and what can make something scary when it’s presented in one way and yet not in another. What is fear? And why do some people enjoy being scared? Audience members are encouraged to express their fears as well. That is—if you’re not too scared! Moderated by Richard S. Todd.

Calling All Ghost Hunters (5:15 pm, room 717A)

You may not need a license to hunt ghosts, but that doesn’t mean you should dive right into a night of specter detecting without a few of the basic items all ghostbuster wannabees should have with them! Ghost huntress extraordinaire Sèphera Girón demonstrates how to listen for ghosts on audio recordings, communicate with spirits with your flashlight, debunk fake ghost photos, and keep accurate records of your paranormal activities. Sorry, proton packs are not included.

Saturday, September 5

Poe vs Lovecraft (5:45 pm, room 705)

This will be a literary throw-down you won’t want to miss, as a panel of experts pits the two biggest American horror authors of the 19th century against each other. Who will win? Edgar Allen Poe and his tales of murder and re-animated corpses, or H. P. Lovecraft and his mythos of unimaginable monsters and Elder Gods? You get to decide the victor.

Tarot Cards 101 (5:45 pm, room 716)

The Lovers. The Hanged Man. Judgement and Death. Over the centuries, these ancient cards have inspired and terrified believers and skeptics alike with their unique blend of ancient symbols and prognostic portent. Join Mistress Ariana as she details the history of the Tarot, their sordid associations with the occult and their continued relevance as tools for divination in our world.

Sunday, September 6

Corsets: Why We Love Them (11:15 am, room 715A)

An in-depth look at one of the most desired yet reviled fashion garments ever created. Why wear them? Where to get them? How do you lace them? Why do so many horror heroines wear them? Sèphera Girón moderates a panel examining the corset’s uncomfortable yet stylish place in the fashion and fetish communities.

What’s the Next Best Thing in Horror Fiction? (11:45 am, room 705)

Zombies, vampires, witches, and werewolves…every trope goes in cycles. The HWA examines where we’ve been, and where we’re going. Come join the panel discussion and have your say on what’s hot and what’s not in horror literature. Moderated by Richard S. Todd.

Fang Bangers: The Evolution of the Vampire (2:15 pm, room 703)

Author Nancy Kilpatrick leads a discussion on vampires—how they’ve evolved through the ages from disfigured monsters to sparkly pretty-boys. Why have they endured for so long, and why do we love them so much?

Going Up

Some secrets should remain hidden.

Investigative journalist Beckett Hayes hopes a stay at a Caribbean resort is just what she needs to recharge her batteries. But mysterious clanging in the night doesn’t let her get much rest. Outside her hotel room, she finds an overgrown, seemingly abandoned elevator leading up the hill. The hotel staff insists the elevator hasn’t worked in years, but Beckett can’t shake the feeling they’re hiding something. Sensing a story, she’s determined to find out the truth. But will she be alive to tell it when she finds out what awaits her at the top of the hill?

Fort Erie Public Library HWA Ontario Panel

Hi All,

Our chapter’s panel at the Fort Erie Public Library is on…… at 7:00. Those who attend will receive some money for gas and will also be able to sell books at the panel. What I need in the meantime is to get a rough idea of how many people plan to attend the panel.

So, if you can let me know if you’ll be there, that’d be great. The sooner the better, really. Contact me at derek_clendening@yahoo.com or on Facebook if your prefer.

Jim Thompson received a phone call from a dead man-a man he watched die one drunken, adulterous night while out of town on business. Jim’s wife, Deirdre, doesn’t know his secret. Neither does Detective Frank Gibbons, who is hot on the case of the year-old crime.

In this supernatural thriller, Jim’s past surfaces through his guilt and lies. As Detective Gibbons closes in on the truth, Jim and Deirdre must run from a malevolent stalker in this terrifying horror tale of deception and murder.

The Orphans of the Creek

Whiteboy is Scanlon Creek’s top disc jockey and a rising star in its drug-dealing underworld. He and his best friend, Joey, are ready to make a killing with a new designer drug that’s sure to take the Creek’s nightclub scene to new heights. He’s handsome, drives a convertible, and is ready to start a family with Juniper, his beautiful girlfriend.

But it all starts to crumble when Whiteboy’s father, absent twenty years since he ran off to follow a mysterious preacher known only as “John Doe”, contacts Whiteboy and entices him into a final visit. In a strange castle in northern Ontario, Whiteboy bids his father farewell and scatters his ashes, only to find that the ashes don’t want to be scattered. They want to stay. They want to live.

Since then, nothing has been the same for Whiteboy and a violent cloud seems to be gathering over Scanlon Creek. Suddenly, the Creek’s seedy side, along with decades of shameful secrets, are boiling out of the shadows. And everything those shadows touch, they cling to. Forever.

Orginising Ad Astra

Hi anyone going to Ad Astra. I just received my schedule. While I intend to be at the HWA table a lot there are times I’ll have to be away and times I’d like to be away. I figure we’ll probably man the table for the same hours as the dealers room which means
Friday 6:00 to 10:00 pm
Saturday 10:00am to 6:30 pm
Sunday 10:00am to 4:00pm

Out of these times I can’t be there
Friday 8:00 to 9:00pm
Saturday 3:00 to 4:00pm
Sunday 1:00 to 3:00pm

Of the open times I would like to be away for.
Friday 7:00 to 8:00pm
Saturday 12:00 to 1:00pm
Saturday 2:00 to 3:00pm

There are other away times but these are the majors for me. Also I’d like to leave the HWA table dressing with some one for the Friday and Saturday nights as I’m staying at a friends place and I don’t want to keep them in my car if I can avoid it.
So folks who else is at Ad Astra and willing to do a table shift or two. Now that we have our schedules from the con we can sort out the who’s and whens.
